Sunday 27 November
Clouds: past, present and future!

Morning: Workshop on energy and climate change organised by eN10ergy and Friends of Bruce Grove Cloud Garden

Afternoon: talks

Luke Howard and the Invention of Clouds - Richard Hamblyn will introduce Luke Howard, amateur meteorologist, whose lifelong fascination with the skies led him to devise the classification and nomenclature of clouds that remains in international use today. He was also a pioneer in the study of urban climate, being the first scientist to link the urban heat effect with the burning of fossil fuels. This talk offers an overview of Luke Howard's meteorological life and achievements.
Forecasting Clouds - Helen Roberts will take us behind the scenes at the Met Office, where we’ll find out how to create a forecast, and where clouds fit in to the forecast process.
The Art and Science of Cloudspotting - Gavin Pretor-Pinney takes you on an illustrated tour of our atmosphere, from the fair-weather cotton tufts of Cumulus clouds to the flying-saucer shapes of lenticularis, and the rare and fleeting undulations known as fluctus clouds. Gavin explains why clouds look the way they do and how they reveal the invisible movements of our atmosphere. Find out why clouds are the most dynamic, evocative and poetic aspect of nature, learn why cloudspotting is the perfect antidote to the pressures of the digital world, and why spending a few moments each day with your head in the clouds will help you keep your feet on the ground.

After the talks Nick Putz, a great, great, great, great grandson of Luke Howard and Tottenham resident, and Gavin Pretor-Pinney declaring Lordship Recreation Ground the world's first official Cloud Appreciation Park.

Followed by a showing of Age of Stupid and online interview with  director, Franny Armstrong.

Bruce Castle lunchtime talk
The Inspiring Mr Howard
By Margaret Burr, local historian and founding member of Tottenham Clouds

“Luke Howard identified virtually all of the factors that are responsible for the urban heat island (UHI) – that he did so in 1820, at the very beginning of the scientific study of weather and climate is remarkable. By any measure, ‘Luke Howard’s account is monumental’.” International Association for Urban Climate (IAUC)

The German philosopher, statesman and poet, Johann Wolfgang Goethe wrote a poem “In Honour of Mr Howard” and described him as “such an excellent man”.
